The Crowning Lotus birth philosophy is grounded in the reality that birth can go many ways and that it's important to prepare for every avenue and be at peace with whatever the outcome is. We encourage people to give their body and baby the benefit of the doubt, but, to remain open and informed about the possible necessity of interventions, while also providing assistance in identifying when they are and are not receiving Evidence Based Care. More than anything, our doula support will help you feel like you were informed, had options, and was heard, supported, and respected in your choices every step of the way (plus, she'll rub your back and run you the most magical baths).

"Crowning Lotus has been providing the community with quality doula services since 2006. Each doula is hand trained to the highest standard and expectation of a professional doula. We build bridges, not walls, with you, your partner AND your care providers to help increase your odds of having an empowering birth experience - however YOU define that." |
Crowning Lotus Birth Doula Care Includes:
The number one benefit of this package: Peace of mind to relax and trust in your body rather than stress out about how much you do or do not know about childbirth. No matter how many books you read, how much advice you get, how many childbirth prep classes you take - you and your partner will probably not retain a lot of the information you will need to put into practical use when the time comes. You are both going to be emotionally invested and possibly exhausted and in need of support. Hiring a doula helps ensure that you can both remain present with each other and in the journey rather than feel like you need to be navigating the birth field. Brains work better in birth when they can be on autopilot, and we can help you get there.
Pregnancy Support: {6-10 hours in person, 15+ hour average of clerical & research work per client}
2nd Prenatal: Overcoming anxieties or fears | discussing roles and expectations | Receive guidance on preparing your body for shorter, easier labors.

We will do anything possible to help you (and your partner) have the birth experience you desire. This might be through massage, acupressure, relaxation methods, creating peaceful, spa-like atmospheres, helping you with breathing, meditation and visualizations and making helpful suggestions. We might rely on our knowledge of the different positions and rebozo techniques to get and keep your baby in a good position and help facilitate your labor. Overall, though, the greatest asset that will help you succeed is our wealth of knowledge that you might need to help you make quick decisions and help you avoid unwanted and unnecessary interventions.

What We Will NOT Do:
- Advocate for you, instead, we will educate and encourage you to advocate for yourself. Having an outsider advocate for you is not going to empower you and it is not appropriate as professionals in this field. We can certainly speak up and remind you of your wishes and encourage you or your partner to communicate with your care provider, and, with permission will help facilitate a productive conversation with your team.
- Stand between you and your healthcare provider. We believe in the birthing team as a whole and trust that you have chosen the right caregiver(s) for the kind of birth that you want. We will not 'rescue' or 'protect' you from anything or anyone, our interest is to create LESS stress - not more, and to empower you to use your own voice and be your own heroes.
- Replace your Partner. We want your partner to be your main source of support and attention, while being supported as well and being able to take breaks and remain more present. All any partner really needs to be is available and present for the laboring mother. From there it's helpful to have guidance on what to actually "do" to help her through. A doula is a bridge between you and your partner, keeping you both in good spirits, facilitating communication, and supporting you both as a unit.
- Do not do anything medical. We will not check your dilation, blood pressure, administer medications or even suggest medications to take. We may suggest something that you can ask your doctor about, but you should always consult your provider.
- We will not judge you. Regardless of your background, age, relationship status and sexuality, job, religion or non-religion. Regardless of how your birth goes or what choices you make for yourself or your baby. We support the decisions you make because we know it is an informed and well considered decision.
Each doula operates on the same level of professionalism, however, each doula has her own style of doula-ing. Generally, these are the basics you can expect when working with any of our wonderful ladies. To find out what each doula does differently, check out their profiles under "Meet The Doulas". If they don't list it, just ask!
Fees
Each Crowning Lotus Doula has her own rates based on the level of care she provides, her training, and experience. Check out our "Meet The Doulas" page to look at each individual's profile and contact her directly to inquire about her fees. We do not want the cost of doula services to keep women from benefitting from these services and truly hope that if you are really in need of this that you will contact us and open up that dialog. We also insist on being valued and compensated for the highly personal and professional services we provide. We truly go above and beyond for each of our clients and spend massive time, energy and even money to be able to be your Childbearing Year expert.

Insurance
There are insurance companies out there who are now fully or partially covering doula services. Clients have also paid us out of HSA accounts as well or have been reimbursed for their services by getting receipts from us and submitting them to their insurance company. It's important that everyone who wants to use a doula takes the time to call their insurance company and ask them about coverage that is available to them. The more people do this, the more they will understand that it is in demand and could be extremely beneficial as a way to save THEM money (um, hello - less interventions and healthier happier moms and babies are much much cheaper!). The CPT code often used to claim doula services is 99499 for "Evaluation and Management Services/Labor Support"
