Professional Birth Mapping Sessions & Workshops
In Person or on Skype, Crowning Lotus Doulas will meet you where you're at.
What is Birth Mapping?
A Birth Map will help you clarify your options and desires and become a helpful tool to communicate with your care provider(s). A good birth map will ask you all the right questions and help you put into place a plan of action for EVERY avenue birth may take.
Won't my Care Provider already know what I want?
You will go over your birth map with your care provider and have them sign and date it, but, the day of your birth, there is a fair chance that your chosen care provider will not be on call. Plus, there are nurses and many other people you have never met before who will be caring for you throughout your labor and postpartum period. Having a birth map, signed by your care provider, will help whoever you end up working with to understand your wishes and help you achieve your goals.
It's important to understand that it is NOT the hospital OR your OB's job to make sure you are informed or prepared for childbirth.
Can't I create a birth map on my own?
Paying a professional to sit down with you and give you the answers and all the info is an extremely well spent investment. With so much misinformation everywhere, a professional can bring peace of mind and clarity for you and your partner. Even if you don't necessarily want a doula at your birth - you can still greatly benefit from the wealth of knowledge they have to offer.
The difference between putting together a birth map on your own and with a trained professional is like painting a room in the dark or with the light on. You simply can't know what you want - or don't want - if you are not fully informed, and, unless you do a LOT of research, read a lot of books, and ask a whole lot of questions, you just won't be. It takes hours and hours of time to research, it's stressful and you would still never know if you actually had all the info.
Are Birth Maps Just For Natural Birth?
NO! All maps are full of many routes to the same destination. No matter how you plan to give birth, your voice still matters! It is important to fully understand what your options are to make your experience less stressful and more fulfilling overall. Doulas can provide you with wonderful ideas to make the most of whatever your situation.
We believe an empowered birth as one that leaves a woman feeling like she was heard and respected - not by whether or not she had a "natural" birth.
What is included in the Birth Mapping Sessions with Crowning Lotus?
You will sit down with a doula for a 1.5-2 hour consultation and go over a detailed worksheet covering all potential aspects of childbirth as well as your recovery and newborn wishes. Along the way you will have any questions answered, options clarified, and be asked all the right questions that you may have never before considered. You will also be given a complete client folder with all of the same handouts we give to each of our doula clients. Once completed you should feel fully informed and much more prepared for your birth.
After this session, we then take your worksheet and break it down into a hard copy of your preferences and email you back the PDF which you can print and bring to an appointment with your care provider to discuss your wishes. This can often be a great tool to help you know for sure that you are working with the right care provider. If they agree to your wishes, they will sign and date the plan and you will keep that in your folder and bring it with you to the hospital to give to your nurses and whoever else is caring for you along the way. Then, all you will need to do is follow the map!
