What is a Postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula is a trained, non-medical professional, who provides practical, confidential, non-judgemental, physical, and emotional support to a family following a birth or adoption. Postpartum Doulas serve as an extra set of well-trained, trustworthy, helping hands available to assist the entire family in their home during the postpartum period. A Postpartum Doula's goal is to work herself out of a job by encouraging  and supporting parents' efforts to increase their knowledge, confidence and family harmony.

Who can use a Postpartum Doula?

Anyone who wants to! The unconditional, non-judgmental support of a Postpartum Doula can benefit any parent. Additionally, individuals who live far from extended family or close friends will find a Postpartum Doula to be a strong source of practical, physical, and emotional support when you need it most and others cannot be physically near.

Factors influencing your decision may include:
  • First time parents
  • Parents with toddlers
  • Limited experience with exposure to newborns
  • Expecting twins or multiples
  • Demanding work schedules of work of spouse.
  • High needs infant/s
  • Limited local support network
  • Difficult labor and delivery or Cesarean
  • Prior postpartum challenges
  • Concern about postpartum depression
