Recognizing that there wasn't a strong presence of community, support and experience in the traditional certification process, Juliea Paige decided that it was time to establish a way to pass these traditions, skills and knowledge down, person to person and simultaneously build team to work with and a community of support for our clients. Crowning Lotus began taking on assistants to train hands-on in 2010, truly setting the bar for what sort of care should be expected from a doula in the birth room, and, creating exceptional bEARTH Doulas. After training and certification, doulas have the option to participate in a Professional Membership within Crowning Lotus for continued support.

Assistants are always a useful addition to any birth team. The extra support is always useful and with this model of care, our clients are getting 2 doulas for the price of one while the assistant is getting quality training from some of Grand Rapids top doulas. If ever a client feels strongly about not wanting an assistant present, however, we completely respect and work around that. 

We are always open to supporting those who are interested in doula work. This work has an important impact on the lives of the people we work with that ripple throughout a lifetime, which is why we believe that experience matters. Working as a doula apprentice will give you real life experience without having to be alone - which can be a disservice to new doulas as well as the families they work with. Crowning Lotus has a very high standard of professionalism, skill and knowledge that goes beyond the traditional processes of certification.
